Each year, the Steamboat Tennis Association (STA) accepts applications for its college scholarship program, which honors the memory of Joe Bonny, a local Steamboat contractor and passionate tennis player who passed away in 2008. Joe’s family established the scholarship to support high school tennis players who demonstrate a passion for the sport and a commitment to academics, and the STA has administered the scholarship ever since.
The scholarship typically awards one $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student. This year, the Board was so impressed with the applicants that it decided to increase the number of scholarships to five, awarding $1,000 to each recipient.
STA Executive Director Warren Luce and Board President Todd Siefken are proud to continue Joe’s legacy and believe he would be pleased to see this year’s recipients recognized for their dedication both on and off the court.
The 2026 Joe Bonny Scholarship recipients are Taylor Rockford, Leslie Jimenez, Lyla Baker, Dylan Quinn, and Shannon Kane. Each has demonstrated a passion for tennis while also excelling academically.
- Lyla Baker played #1 doubles this past season with Leslie Jimenez, advancing to the quarterfinals of the state championships in Colorado Springs. She earned a 4.29 GPA and plans to attend the University of South Carolina this fall to study Biomedical Engineering.
- Leslie Jimenez partnered with Lyla Baker at #1 doubles this past season, also advancing to the quarterfinals of the state championships in Colorado Springs. She earned a 4.0 GPA and plans to attend CU Boulder this fall to study Molecular and Cellular Biology.
- Shannon Kane played #4 doubles this past season and advanced with her partner to the playback final at the regional tournament in Grand Junction. She earned a 4.4 GPA and plans to attend the University of Utah this fall to study Biology or Psychology.
- Dylan Quinn played #3 singles this past season and advanced to the semifinals of the regional tournament in Grand Junction. She earned a 4.1 GPA and plans to attend Cal Poly this fall to study Kinesiology.
- Taylor Rockford played #2 doubles this past season and advanced with her partner to the finals of the regional tournament in Grand Junction. She earned a 3.44 GPA and plans to attend San Diego State University this fall to study Environmental Sciences.
